K53 Road Signs Guide

South Africa has three categories of road signs. Knowing them is worth 28 of your 64 exam marks.

Top Tips to Pass First Time

These proven study strategies come from driving instructors and thousands of test-takers across South Africa.

📅
Study Over 2 Weeks
Don't cram the night before. Spread studying over 14 days — 30 min per day is better than 7 hours the day before the test.
🔁
Repeat Until You Score 90%+
Resit each section of practice tests until you consistently score above 90%. If you can pass harder practice tests, the real exam feels easy.
🚦
Memorise Sign Shapes First
Regulatory signs are round, warning signs are triangular, and informatory signs are rectangular. Shapes help you categorise unknown signs instantly.
📏
Learn Key Distances
Following distance: 3 seconds in normal conditions. Stopping distances at 100 km/h: 100 metres. These come up frequently in the rules of the road section.
👁️
Focus on Observation Procedure
The K53 driving test is heavy on observation — check mirrors every 5-8 seconds, blind spots before lane changes, and always yield to pedestrians.
🧠
Understand, Don't Memorise
Questions are randomised from 1 200+. Understand the reasoning behind each rule rather than memorising question-answer pairs blindly.
📱
Use Multiple Resources
Combine this site with the official K53 book, YouTube tutorials, and practice apps. The more exposure you get to questions, the better prepared you'll be.
😴
Sleep Well Before the Test
A rested mind performs better. Get 8 hours sleep the night before. Have breakfast. Arrive early so you're calm and not rushed before your session starts.
📋
Read Each Question Twice
Many questions have tricky wording. Words like "EXCEPT," "NOT" and "ALWAYS" change the meaning. Read slowly and carefully before selecting your answer.

Learner's Licence
A permit allowing you to practise driving on public roads under the supervision of a licensed driver. Valid for 24 months.
K53 System

Observation Procedure
The systematic checking process before any manoeuvre: mirrors → signal → mirror → blind spot → manoeuvre. Essential for the driving licence test.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything South African learner drivers want to know about the K53 test.

How many questions are in the K53 learners test?
The official K53 learners test has 64 questions divided into three sections: 8 on Vehicle Controls, 28 on Road Signs and Markings, and 28 on Rules of the Road. Questions are randomly selected from a bank of over 1 200 questions, so every test is different. You have 60 minutes to complete all 64 questions.
What is the pass mark for the K53 learners test?
You must pass all three sections independently. The minimum is: 6/8 (75%) for Vehicle Controls, 23/28 (82%) for Road Signs, and 22/28 (79%) for Rules of the Road. If you fail even one section, you fail the entire exam — even if you scored 100% on the other two.
How long does a learners licence last?
A South African learner's licence is valid for 24 months (2 years) from the date of issue. Within this period, you must pass your driver's licence test. If your learner's licence expires, you'll need to reapply and write the theory test again.
How old do you need to be to get a learners licence?
You must be at least 17 years old on the day you write the K53 learners test. There is no upper age limit. You will need a valid South African ID book, smart ID card, or passport to prove your age when applying.
Can I drive alone with a learners licence?
No. With a learner's licence (also called a learner's permit), you may only drive on public roads if accompanied by a person who holds a valid driver's licence for that type of vehicle. They must sit in the front passenger seat at all times while you are driving.
What documents do I need to apply for a learners licence?
You need: your original South African ID or passport, a completed application form (DL-1), 2 passport-size photos, proof of residential address not older than 3 months, and the applicable fee. You will also undergo a basic eye test at the DLTC on the day of your application.
What is the difference between Code 8 and Code 10?
Code 8 covers light motor vehicles not exceeding 3 500 kg GVM — essentially cars, SUVs and bakkies. Code 10 covers heavy motor vehicles over 3 500 kg, such as trucks. If you get a Code 10 licence, you can also legally drive Code 8 vehicles. Code 14 covers extra heavy vehicles like buses and articulated trucks.
How long after failing can I rewrite the learners test?
You must wait at least 7 days before you can book and rewrite the K53 learners test after failing. Use this time wisely — identify which section you failed, focus your study on that area, and do extra practice tests before retrying.
Is the K53 test done on a computer or paper?
Most modern DLTCs in South Africa now use a computerised system. However, some smaller or rural centres still use paper-based tests. Both formats contain the same questions. If you're unsure, contact your local DLTC before your test date to confirm which format they use.
