Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Can I drive a Code 8 vehicle with a Code 10 licence?

Yes. A Code 10 licence automatically allows you to drive any vehicle covered by Code 8 (light motor vehicles). Similarly, Code 14 covers Code 10 and Code 8.

❓ Do I need a separate learner's licence for each code?

Yes. You must apply for a learner's licence specific to the code you intend to drive. The written test is the same for all codes, but the practical test vehicle must match the code.

❓ What is the difference between Code 10 and Code 14?

Code 10 covers heavy vehicles up to 16 000 kg GVM (non-articulated). Code 14 covers extra-heavy vehicles over 16 000 kg and any articulated vehicle (tractor + trailer).

❓ Can I upgrade from Code 8 to Code 10 without redoing the learner's?

No. You must pass the learner's test for the higher code (although the test is identical), then take a practical driving test in a Code 10 vehicle.
