🚗 Essential for Learner's Test | Updated June 2026
The vehicle controls section of the K53 learner's licence test tests your knowledge of the basic controls of a motor vehicle. You must know the location, purpose, and correct use of each control. This guide covers everything you need to know for the test and for safe driving.
📌 Why Vehicle Controls Matter
Understanding vehicle controls is not just about passing the test – it's about being able to operate a vehicle safely. The K53 expects you to know controls like pedals, steering, gears, lights, wipers, and mirrors. Many test questions ask about the correct use of these controls in specific situations.
Steering and Driver Position
Steering wheel – Controls the direction of the vehicle. The K53 recommends the "10-and-2" or "9-and-3" hand position for maximum control. Never palm the steering wheel or cross your arms unnecessarily.
Driver's seat adjustments – You should be able to reach all pedals comfortably, see over the steering wheel, and have a clear view of the road and mirrors.
Foot Pedals (Manual Transmission)
In a manual car, the pedals from left to right are:
Clutch (left) – Disengages the engine from the wheels. Press fully to change gears. Release smoothly to engage power.
Brake (centre) – Slows or stops the vehicle. Press progressively – not sharply (except in emergencies).
Accelerator (right) – Increases engine speed and vehicle speed. Press gently for smooth acceleration.
For automatic transmission: only brake (left) and accelerator (right). No clutch pedal.
⚠️ K53 Tip: Pedal Use
Never "ride" the clutch (resting foot on clutch pedal) – it causes unnecessary wear. Always use the right foot for both brake and accelerator (not left foot braking). The heel of your foot should stay on the floor while pivoting between pedals.
Gear Lever
The gear lever selects the transmission ratio. Common gear patterns for manual cars:
Reverse (R) – For moving backwards. Only engage when vehicle is completely stopped.
Neutral (N) – No gear engaged. Used when idling with clutch up.
Automatic gear selector positions: P (Park), R (Reverse), N (Neutral), D (Drive), and sometimes L or 2 for lower gears.
Handbrake (Parking Brake)
The handbrake (usually a lever between the front seats, or a foot pedal in some vehicles) locks the rear wheels. Use it:
When parking on a slope (to prevent rolling)
When starting off on a hill (to prevent rolling back – K53 requires handbrake start on steep inclines)
During emergency stops (only if foot brake fails)
Release the handbrake fully before moving off. The K53 test requires you to demonstrate correct handbrake use.
Direction Indicators (Turn Signals)
Use indicators to signal your intention to turn, change lanes, or pull over. The stalk is usually on the left side of the steering column.
Up – Right turn
Down – Left turn
When to signal – At least 30 metres before turning. Signal for at least 3 seconds before changing lanes.
Cancel – After completing the manoeuvre, ensure the indicator cancels automatically or manually turn it off.
Lighting Controls
Modern cars have a rotary dial or stalk for lights. The main settings:
Off / Daytime running lights (DRL) – No lights (DRL only if fitted).
Parking lights (sidelights) – Used when parked at night on an unlit road.
Low beam (dipped headlights) – Normal night driving, in built-up areas, and when following another vehicle.
High beam (main beam) – For dark, unlit roads with no oncoming traffic. Dim within 150 metres of an approaching vehicle or when following within 60 metres.
Fog lights – Only used when visibility is less than 150 metres (heavy fog, rain, or snow). Must be turned off when visibility improves.
💡 K53 Test Light Questions
Common test questions: "When must you use low beam?" (Built-up areas, approaching other vehicles, following within 60m). "When can you use fog lights?" (Visibility less than 150m). Know the difference between high and low beam.
Windscreen Wipers and Washers
The wiper stalk is usually on the right side of the steering column.
Intermittent – Light rain or drizzle.
Low speed – Steady rain.
High speed – Heavy rain.
Washer – Pull or push the stalk to spray washer fluid onto the windscreen. Never use wipers on a dry screen – it damages the blades.
Rear wiper/washer (if fitted) – Usually a separate button or twist on the stalk.
Rear-View Mirrors
Mirrors are critical for observation – a major part of the K53 driving philosophy.
Interior rear-view mirror – Adjust so you see the entire rear window. Used for general monitoring of traffic behind.
Left exterior mirror (passenger side) – Adjust to see the side of your vehicle and the lane beside you. Important for blind spot reduction.
Right exterior mirror (driver side) – Adjust to see the adjacent lane and part of your vehicle.
K53 Mirror Checks: You must check mirrors before changing speed, changing direction, and before any manoeuvre (MSPSL routine).
Other Important Controls
Horn
Use only to warn others of danger. Not to express annoyance. On the test, use the horn if necessary to alert pedestrians or other drivers.
Hazard Lights
Button with a red triangle. Used to indicate a hazard or emergency (e.g., breakdown, accident, obstruction). Also used to warn following traffic of sudden slowing ahead. Never use hazard lights while driving in normal conditions (e.g., in rain – use headlights instead).
Air Conditioning / Heating
Controls for cabin comfort. Not part of the test, but you should know basic operation for demisting windows (use AC with warm air to clear fog).
Demister (Defroster)
Rear window demister (usually a button with a curved window symbol) uses heating elements to clear condensation. Front demister uses air vents directed at the windscreen.
Starting and Stopping Sequence (K53)
The K53 teaches a specific routine for starting and moving off:
Check mirrors and blind spots
Ensure handbrake is engaged
Press clutch (manual) or brake (auto)
Start engine
Select first gear (or D for auto)
Check mirrors again and signal
Look over shoulder (blind spot) in direction of intended movement
Release handbrake and move off smoothly
📝 Test Your Knowledge – Free Practice Test
Our free K53 practice test includes questions on vehicle controls. Get instant feedback and track your progress.
"What is the purpose of the clutch?" – To disengage the engine from the transmission for gear changes.
"When should you use low beam headlights?" – In built-up areas, when following another vehicle within 60m, and when approaching oncoming traffic within 150m.
"When may you use fog lights?" – Only when visibility is less than 150 metres due to fog, heavy rain, or snow.
"What does the handbrake do?" – Locks the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving when parked.
"How often should you check your mirrors?" – Before changing speed, changing direction, and before any manoeuvre.
Final Tips for the Test
Memorise the location and function of each control – the test asks direct questions.
Understand the difference between high beam and low beam, and know the exact distances for dimming.
Learn the MSPSL routine (Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed, Look) – it's central to K53.
Practice with our mock tests to reinforce your knowledge.
📌 Pro tip: If you have access to a vehicle, sit in the driver's seat and identify each control before starting the engine. This hands-on practice helps cement your knowledge for the test.
